Connecting Generations at Lammermuir House Care Home

Here at Lammermuir House Care Home in East Lothian, we recognise the huge benefits intergenerational connection can bring for both young and elderly people. In December, we invited a group of vibrant young people from Dunbar Table Tennis for a mini tournament with our residents and staff.
This fun-filled afternoon marked two years since the club first started visiting our care home, and it has been a pleasure to watch the bond between the two generations growing stronger with each visit. A highlight of the day was a particularly competitive head-to-head game between Giosue and Finn from team one, against Dominic and Dai from team two. After five thrilling games, team one celebrated a well-deserved 3-2 victory as residents cheered enthusiastically from the sidelines.

The day was organised by our fantastic Activities Coordinator Laura, who said, “The children are more than welcome here. They bring so much joy and fun into our little Lammermuir community, and our residents absolutely love it.”
Later on in the afternoon, we enjoyed a slower-paced activity, with the kind children handing out homemade Christmas Cards to our residents which were displayed proudly in our home. Christmas carols filled our home, along with smiles and festive cheer as our residents and our guests sang along and tapped our feet.

Wojciech Kosciolek, our wonderful Home manager, said: "Community connections are incredibly important to our residents. Intergenerational sessions bring so much joy and energy into the home, while nostalgic activities help residents reconnect with memories that are meaningful to them. These moments aren’t just enjoyable, they support wellbeing, spark conversation and remind residents that they are still very much part of the wider community."
The team here at Lammermuir House look forward to continuing to embrace these vital intergenerations activities and community events as part of our wider activities and entertainment programme. These meaningful interactions bring energy, laughter, and a renewed sense of purpose, as residents enjoy sharing stories, skills, and life experiences. At the same time, children gain understanding and respect for older generations, challenging stereotypes on both ends. We’re committed to reducing feelings of isolation, encouraging social engagement and creating a warm, vibrant environment where everyone can learn from one another.
